A 52-year-old man involved in a motor vehicle accident developed AO/OTA C3 pilon fracture. A & B) Preoperative anteroposterior and lateral radiographs showed the fibular fracture and distal tibial articular surface multi-fragment. C & D) The anteroposterior and lateral view of the ankle showed external fixation was used to maintain the length and axial alignment of the limb undergoing external and internal fixation in the first stage. E) The postoperative sagittal computed tomography scans showed that the congruency of the articular surface was not satisfactory after undergoing external and internal fixation in the first stage
