Causative factors

Common in running sports and may have been precipitated by a change in training load (volumes, duration or intensity).

Common in running, tabbing and jumping sports and may have been precipitated by a change in training load (volumes, duration or intensity).

Pain site

Localised tenderness in mid portion of Achilles (2–6cm from insertion) or at insertion.

Pain at inferior pole of patella.

Pain pattern

Pain may occur at start of activity and then ease, or may increase with duration of activity. Pain after period of rest or on waking.

Palpation findings

Localised tenderness in mid portion of Achilles (2–6cm from insertion) or at insertion.

Focal pain on palpation.
