Table 1 Inclusion and exclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria

-Age 18–50 years old

-Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid or other systemic arthritis

-Single symptomatic cartilage defect on medial or lateral femoral condyle or trochlea

-Malalignment >5° measured on HKA images

-Defect size larger than 2 cm2

-No radiological osteoarthritis

-Lesion graded ICRS 3–4

-Obesity (Body mass index > 30)

- > 50 % intact meniscus

-Comorbidities that may influence surgery or rehabilitation

-Ligamentous stable knee

-Pregnancy

-Acceptable range of motion (5–105°)

-Inability to complete questionnaires or rehabilitation

-Lysholm score < 75

-Serious alcohol or drug abuse

-Informed consent

-Previous surgery to the chondral defect except OCD surgery
